Will the Charlotte Bobcats get the #1 pick on May 30th, 2012?

May 30th, 2012 is the day when the world will find out the order of the NBA Draft lottery selections. The NBA Draft Lottery will determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2012 NBA Draft. For the first time, the lottery drawing will occur at ABC’s Times Square Studios in New York City, during the Kia NBA Countdown pregame show at 7 p.m. ET with the Lottery drawing scheduled for 8 p.m. on ESPN. The NBA Draft Lottery will also be available on ESPN Radio, ESPN3, ESPN Mobile TV and via the WatchESPN app. The 2012 NBA Draft will be televised on ESPN on Thursday, June 28th, at 7 p.m.

Many people assume that the Charlotte Bobcats will get the #1 pick and select Kentucky’s Anthony Davis. Contrary to popular opinion, this is not necessarily true. The Bobcats have the best odds landing the #1 pick. Here’s a breakdown of each team’s chances to win the coveted #1 pick:

2012 FIRST ROUND DRAFT CHOICE ORDER

Team Record Chances of #1 pick
Charlotte 7-59 25%
Washington 20-46 19.9%
Cleveland 21-45 13.8%
New Orleans 21-45 13.7%
Sacramento 22-44 7.6%
New Jersey (to Portland unless it’s in the top three) 22-44 7.5%
Golden State (to Utah unless it’s in the top seven) 23-43 3.6%
Toronto 23-43 3.5%
Detroit 25-41 1.7%
New Orleans (from Minnesota) 26-40 1.1%
Portland 28-38 0.8%
Milwaukee 31-35 0.7%
Phoenix 33-33 0.6%
Houston 34-32 0.5%

Note: The Hornets have two lottery picks, and thus a 14.8 percent chance to land the top pick.

Only the top three picks are determined by the lottery. The rest of the first round will be determined based on record. In other words, the lowest the Bobcats can pick is fourth.
