The Charlotte Bobcats Must Give Jeff Adrien More Playing Time

A couple months ago, the Charlotte Bobcats made a quiet pickup from the D League. Jeff Adrien has gone from a bench warmer, to a seldom used role player, and now, to a bonafide rotation guy the Bobcats could lean on to get tougher on the glass.

The Bobcats have shown some faith in Adrien; He’s started four games this year and played in 21. He’s also averaged 15 minutes per game this season.

But that faith has been inconsistent. After starting last night against the Heat, Adrien dropped eight points and three boards in 15 minutes. He didn’t play the rest of the game.

Adrien, too has been inconsistent since his start against the Chicago Bulls January 28; In that game he scored 14 points on 71 percent shooting, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots in 35 minutes.

Over the next two games, his minutes dropped to 20 and 21 respectively, and Adrien could only muster a combined 11 points on a sub-par shooting percentage. He did, however, grab 13 rebounds in those 41 minutes.

Which brings us back to the present.

Even if Adrien isn’t affecting the game offensively, he’s almost certainly impacting it on the glass. Per 36 minutes, he’s averaging 10 boards per game.

He’s also got a solid true shooting percentage (takes into account free-throws and three-pointers) close to 50, and he doesn’t need the ball to be effective. Adrien’s usage rate (estimate of the number of team plays a player uses while on the court) is below 15 percent.

There’s no way Reggie Williams should take any of his minutes. There’s no way Tyrus Thomas should see floor time over him.

There’s honestly not many situations where Hakim Warrick should cut into Adrien’s playing time either, unless Charlotte found itself in a really close game and Dunlap was worried about his lack of experience in crunch time.
