2013 NBA Draft: Should the Charlotte Bobcats Target Mitch McGary?

Coming out of his junior season in high school, Mitch McGary was one of the most sought after prospects in the country. He had an underwhelming senior season, and hasn’t played eye-poppingly well this season… until now. So should the Charlotte Bobcats target him in the 2013 NBA draft?

Well they certainly shouldn’t go after him with their first pick in the draft. If they end up getting a second first rounder from Portland (top 12 protected) they should give him a look.

He only averaged 19 minutes, but still managed almost eight points and over six rebounds per game this year.

Those numbers have exploded since the NCAA tournament began, though. He’s averaged 16 points and almost 12 rebounds in 31 minutes per game. He’s also averaged 1.2 blocks and two steals per game over that span too.

The Bobcats need a good big man to build their post-game around. McGary may very well turn into that kind of player.

Charlotte should also look at enticing a good, starter-level center or power forward to town through free agency no matter who (or if) they draft this year.

That pick Portland owes the ‘Cats might not be coming to the Queen City this season, and Charlotte probably won’t try to trade for another pick this year with picks from both Portland and Detroit potentially on the horizon next season.

If McGary leads his Wolverines to a victory in the national championship game tonight, though, expect the Bobcats to give him a serious look if they do land that Trail Blazers pick when the season ends.
