Charlotte Bobcats Showing Interest In Nate McMillan

The Charlotte Bobcats are believed to be interested in former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, according to coaching industry sources who spoke to Ken Berger of CBS Sports.

McMillan is one of the hottest coaching commodities available. He interviewed with the Detroit Pistons earlier this week and Berger writes Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni would like to add him as a defensive assistant on his staff.

McMillan, a Raleigh native and North Carolina State alumni, interviewed for the Bobcats vacancy last offseason. He took a year off from coaching after being dismissed as the coach of Blazers following six seasons.

As a coach, McMillan has a .514 winning percentage and has been to the postseason five times in 11 tries. He’s improved defenses and peaked the Trail Blazers and Seattle Super Sonics in more than 50 wins.

The Bobcats have said they’re looking for a coach who can be an effective leader and communicator for their young group, and McMillan’s regular season success, defensive improvement and playoff appearances have to be very appealing.

If McMillan is confirmed to be interviewing with the Bobcats, he would join Nate Tibbetts, Alvin Gentry, Kelvin Sampson, and Elston Turner as official candidates. Quin Snyder has been rumored as well, and there’s no word yet on whether the team has reached out to former Lakers assistant Steve Clifford.
