Charlotte Hornets Change Official For 2014-15

Following a unanimous vote of the league’s owners, the Charlotte Bobcats were granted permission Thursday to change their name to the Hornets. The change will become effective after the 2013-14 season.

Michael Jordan wanted the Hornets name after New Orleans requested a change to the Pelicans under new ownership. Jordan requested the name in May, which allowed enough time to get the name for the 2014-15 season.

Jordan has said that he wants to recreate the atmosphere and culture of the Hornets from his playing days. The Charlotte Coliseum (amicably known as “The Hive”) had one of the loudest crowds in basketball and the Hornets were frequently at the top of the league in attendance.

The Coliseum was also home to one of the most unique court designs and uniforms. Charlotte embraced the Hornets a lot more than they have the Bobcats, who’ve mostly been known for a losing culture.
