Michael Jordan: "Success of Bobcats Is Through McRoberts."

Michael Jordan spoke with the Charlotte Observer and Associated Press Friday about the Charlotte Bobcats upcoming season and future plans.

Among the most interesting quotes was Jordan’s praise of starting forward Josh McRoberts.

“The success of the team is McRoberts and how he can connect the dots,” said Jordan. “Hopefully he doesn’t opt out of his contract. We need to do everything we can to keep him.“

The Bobcats acquired McRoberts nine months ago from the Orlando Magic in exchange for Hakim Warrick. McRoberts started 19 games for Charlotte following the trade and gave the team positive contributions on both sides of the court.

Jordan noted that each time McRoberts played, the team performed better. The Bobcats went 8-11 in the games McRoberts started last season.

In the offseason McRoberts signed a two year, $5.4 million contract to remain in Charlotte. The contract contains a player option following the 2013-14 season.

Though McRoberts can be considered one of the team’s veterans, he will only turn 27 in February.

  • On Bismack Biyombo: “Biyombo will either give us (what they want) or we’ll look at some other avenues for backup centers.”
  • On Al Jefferson: “We needed to start making that move to more established players. You can’t just go young, young, young.”
  • On Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: “He shows us signs (of growth) but he also shows us signs of being a 19 or 20-year-old kid. He is a hard-working kid. He’s learning on the run. It’s not that he doesn’t have talent. But it’s hard to learn in this (NBA) culture because there are so many games. (Bismack) Biyombo is the same way.”
  • On tanking: “I don’t know if some teams have thought of that. That’s not something that we would do. I don’t believe in that. If that was my intention I never would have paid (free agent) Al Jefferson $13 million a year.”
  • On team chemistry: “I see 15 guys who get along. The environment, the culture, in the locker room is very positive. That shows, especially on defense. It’s not that they won’t make mistakes, but there is effort. The rules and players may change, but energy and effort never changes.”
