Yesterday a rumor went around the internet and social media that the Charlotte Hornets might pursue Carmelo Anthony over the off-season. Again, it is just a rumor, but should the Hornets actually pursue Anthony?
Of course they should!
Why exactly might Carmelo leave the bright lights of Madison Square Garden and the presence of Phil Jackson for Charlotte? Maybe because Charlotte has an overbearing presence of its own…Michael Jordan.
Who wouldn’t want to play for MJ? The best and most well-known basketball player of all time? Carmelo is also a part of the Jordan brand, as he signed with them when he came into the NBA.
Besides Michael Jordan, is there any other reason why Carmelo Anthony might consider taking his talents to Charlotte? How about the possible Big 3 consisting of Carmelo, Al Jefferson, and Kemba Walker? That would definitely put the Hornets in immediate contention in the Eastern Conference.
Before we get carried away, how likely is it that Anthony actually leaves the New York Knicks? More likely than you think.
New York failed to even make the postseason this year, something the Hornets were able to achieve.
Carmelo’s supporting cast in New York is falling apart. Tyson Chandler and Amare Stoudemire are declining, and Andrea Bargnani is eating up a lot of the Knicks’ salary. The only bright spot might be Iman Shumpert and the rookie Tim Hardaway Jr.
The Hornets clearly present the better supporting cast over what the Knicks have to offer. Not only that, but Charlotte also has two 1st round picks in the upcoming NBA Draft.
Even if Anthony does in fact decide to leave the Knicks, there are other places he might land, maybe more appealing places.
The Chicago Bulls have always been rumored to be interested in acquiring Carmelo, but the Houston Rockets have emerged as a potential landing spot. Word is that Houston is going to go “all in” on Anthony, willing to trade anyone besides Dwight Howard and James Harden.
It is a long-shot that Carmelo will join the Hornets, and still just a rumor at this point. But I believe it is something that not just the Charlotte Hornets should consider, but Carmelo Anthony as well.
