When Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks dismissed Mike Woodson has the head coach of the Knicks, many rumors started as to who may be the front-runner for the job.
Former TNT analyst Steve Kerr was said to be the Knicks’ first choice, but he declined and accepted the Golden State Warriors coaching job. We did not expect Phil Jackson to strike out on his Plan A, especially since Steve Kerr was a former player of his from his time with the Chicago Bulls in the days of Michael Jordan.
Current Oklahoma City Thuder guard and former L.A. Laker Derek Fisher is now rumored to be the front-runner for the New York Knicks job. Phil Jackson was fined $25,000 recently for “tampering” with Derek Fisher, when in a press conference, he said he would like to talk to Fisher about the head coaching job. Like Steve Kerr, Fisher is a former player of Phil Jackson.
Derek Fisher isn’t the only one interested in becoming the next head coach of the New York Knicks. Former Knicks center, and current Charlotte Hornets associate head coach Patrick Ewing wants the job as well.
“I would love to come back and coach the Knicks,” said Patrick Ewing in an interview with CBS Sports Radio. “I’m not sure what is going to happen in terms of who they’re going to have fill that void, but if I get a call, I’m ready,” Ewing also added.
Patrick Ewing is a Knicks LEGEND. He played 15 seasons with the Knicks, and his number 33 is retired by them. He was an 11-time All-Star, and Ewing is a two-time Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.
Not only that, but Patrick Ewing has some NBA coaching experience to go along with it. He has never been an NBA head coach, but he has been an assistant with the Washington Wizards (2002-2003), Houston Rockets (2003-2006), Orlando Magic (2007-2012), and with the Charlotte Hornets (2013-present).
I am sure Derek Fisher would make a great head coach, but Patrick Ewing shouldn’t be flying under the radar. He has more coaching experience than Derek Fisher (which isn’t saying much considering Fisher has zero experience). Ewing would be a popular hire in New York, almost like Dominique Wilkins becoming the coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Just an example.
Derek Fisher is a former player of Phil Jackson, so he will probably be the favorite to get the job, but the Knicks need to consider the Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Patrick Ewing.
