Charlotte Hornets: Jay Bilas weighs in on NBA Draft

This years NBA Draft has been a very anticipated one. It has been said that it could end up being the best draft since the 2003 NBA Draft, which included LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh.

That is a very high standard to live up to, but nonetheless it should be a great draft.

It is a very deep draft, where you could get as good of a talent at 10th overall as you could picking in the Top 5.

The Charlotte Hornets currently hold the 9th overall selection, and everyone seems to have a different opinion as to who they think the Hornets should draft.

Former Duke Blue Devil and current ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas gave his opinion on who he thinks the Hornets should draft in an interview with CBS Sports Radio. Here are the players he was asked about, and a brief summary of what he said about each player:

Gary Harris: Jay Bilas currently has Gary Harris ranked 10th on his “list” he did’t use the word mock draft or big board. Bilas described Harris as a “excellent prospect, tough player, good shooter, needs to improve on passing ability, good defensive player, but he is very small.”

P.J. Hairston: Jay Bilas has Hairston listed at 21st. “He can really really shoot, has deep range, needs to improve his conditioning, plays good-enough defense, wouldn’t pick him at 9, but he has a lot of value.”

James Young: Jay Bilas has Young ranked at 12th. “He is very talented, athletic player, good off the dribble, can get to the basket and he will dunk on you.”

We all remember James Young’s epic dunk from the NCAA championship game vs. UConn. If you have never seen it, please do yourself a favor and watch the video below:

Doug McDermott: Jay Bilas really likes McDermott’s potential in the NBA, even acknowledges he might be gone before the Hornets pick at 9th overall. “He can be very good, has a high IQ, really long shooting range, tough competitor, but the question is how good will he be on the defensive side of the ball?” Bilas also compared him to Gordon Hayward, said McDermott can also become one of the best “white players in the NBA.”

Nik Stauskas: “He is a great shooter, and he also improved his ability to put the ball on the floor.” Jay Bilas added that he thought Stauskas would “fall off” when Trey Burke left Michigan, as Burke created a lot of his shots, but Stauskas managed to get better. He also compared Nik Stauskas’ body fat to a sea lion. Interesting.

Out of all the players mentioned, Bilas likes McDermott the best. But he also thinks there is a chance Doug McDermott will be drafted before the Hornets have a chance to select him.
