We have been talking a lot about all the possibilities the Charlotte Hornets have with the number 9 pick in the draft, but not so much with the number 24 pick in the 1st round.
There is a lot of people who want to see the Hornets draft former UNC star P.J. Hairston, and fairly so as he is a talented player. But if he is not on the board when its the Hornets turn to pick 24th, they should draft former UConn point guard Shabazz Napier.
If you watched any of the NCAA tournament this year, you know Shabazz Napier can flat-out score. Napier carried the Huskies to the NCAA title, scoring 22 points in the championship against Kentucky. Here is the scouting video on Shabazz Napier:
Picking Napier with the 24th pick would be great for the Charlotte Hornets. Yes, the Hornets already have Kemba Walker (also a former UConn player) but Shabazz Napier would be a great player off the bench.
Bench scoring wasn’t one of the Bobcats’ strengths last year as they finished 21st in the NBA. Drafting Shabazz Napier would help change that.
Look at all the great NBA teams, they all have scoring off the bench. In order to be an elite team, you have to have players outside your starting lineup to be able to score. Shabazz Napier will help change that.
LeBron James is also very fond of Napier, as he tweeted this during the NCAA tournament:
No way u take another PG in the lottery before Napier.
— LeBron James (@KingJames) April 8, 2014
He is wrong about that, as it seems Marcus Smart, Dante Exum, and Tyler Ennis will all be drafted before Napier, but that doesn’t make them better than Shabazz.
In conclusion, I think the Hornets should pick Napier. In fact, I will be ecstatic if they do.
