Utah informed Charlotte this morning that they are matching the offer the Hornets made to Gordon Hayward. While this was not unexpected, it is still disappointing for Charlotte. Hayward, a fourth year veteran out of Butler, would have brought instant scoring to the perimeter. He also would have been another ball handler on a team that needs it, especially with the loss of Josh McRoberts. Charlotte offered the max in hopes that the salary commitment would be enough to deter Utah.
Though Charlotte would have loved to add Hayward, Charlotte is now freed up from the contract made to him and still can pursue a free agent or use their cap space in a potential trade. While a perimeter player is still a need, the team will also look to add a point guard. Names that have been mentioned in the past for that position include Ramon Sessions, Brian Roberts, and Kirk Hinrich. A new name that has been mentioned is former Bobcat D.J. Augustine. I am not sure how Hornets fans would fill about his return but you can count on the next few days being very important for Charlotte.
