The San Antonio Spurs made some news on Tuesday afternoon when they announced they will hire Becky Hammon as an assistant coach, making her the 2nd female to coach in the NBA, and 1st full-time female assistant coach.
I think a lot of us saw this coming, for me it was a question on when rather than if it will happen.
Becky Hammon isn’t the first one, though. Lisa Boyer served as a volunteer assistant for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2001-2002 season.
Becky Hammon had a very successful WNBA career. She played for the New York Liberty from 1999-2006, and for the San Antonio Stars from 2007-2014. She was a 6 time WNBA All-Star, and was voted into the Top 15 WNBA players of all time.
She will also get to stay in San Antonio to coach the Spurs, so she probably won’t have to change her address.
Spurs point guard Tony Parker and Becky Hammon have been close friends for a long-time. Now, she’s one of his coaches.
“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic, and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”
Becky Hammon also had a few things to say herself:
“I know Coach Pop has made it very clear to me that I’m being hired because of my basketball IQ and because I’m qualified. He said, it just so happens you are a woman, but I’m hiring you because of your IQ and personal relationship skills. I’m just grateful they see something in me that fits in with them and their organization.”
