Could Stephanie Ready become an NBA coach?

Becky Hammon became the 2nd female coach in NBA history on Tuesday when it was announced she was hired by the San Antonio Spurs. She is the first full-time female assistant coach, as Lisa Boyer was a volunteer assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2001-2002.

In the last few years, there have been rumors about a female becoming an NBA coach, and it was a matter of time before it happened. Becky Hammon is only an assistant, but it might be soon we see a female become a Head Coach.

Gregg Popovich can’t coach forever, if he retires in the next few years, could Hammon take the head coaching job if she does well as an assistant? You never know.

One of the next potential female coaching candidates is Charlotte Bobcats, now Hornets sideline reporter Stephanie Ready.

Stephanie Ready is more than a sideline reporter, she knows the game of basketball. From 2001 to 2003, she was the assistant coach of the Greenville  Grooves of the NBA Development League.

“Coach Ready knows the game of basketball, has a proven track record at the collegiate level of basketball that helped her to develop her skills, and she comes highly recommended,” said former Greenville Groove guard Merl Code, who played for Stephanie Ready. He also added that “we don’t have time to worry about who is coaching us, coach Ready is there to help us and we want to let her help.”

In addition to being the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets sideline reporter, Stephanie Ready was a part-time sideline reporter for TNT during the 2006 and 2007 NBA Playoffs.

At the end of the day, Stephanie Ready knows the game of basketball. She played it in college, was a coach for a few years, and has experience in the media coverage of it being a sideline reporter. Stephanie Ready is more than qualified for being an NBA assistant coach, and it might just be a matter of time before she gets a job. The hiring of Becky Hammon only helps her chances, especially if Hammon has success with the San Antonio Spurs.
