Football season is finally here!
The Carolina Panthers open up their preseason schedule against the Buffalo Bills on Friday night at Bank of America stadium in Charlotte. Despite the loss of Steve Smith, fans in Charlotte are still excited for the upcoming season. It will be weird to see Steve not in a Panthers uniform.
Cam Newton will be sitting out the opener, resting his injured ankle. No one really expected Cam to play tonight, so this news of him sitting out shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Defensive end Charles Johnson is sitting out as well. Hey, it’s the NFL preseason, why not just sit everyone?
I can’t hardly watch an NFL preseason game without thinking in my head “please don’t get hurt, please don’t get hurt.” Especially if I’m watching my favorite team, or a player that is on my fantasy team.
Speaking of injuries, Cam Newton’s ankle could become a problem. He said recently that he could still feel the “thump” in his ankle. That’s not a good thing.
“It’s like a thump from your mom when you said something that you weren’t supposed to, she’ll thump you dead in your ear on your head. It’ll hurt for that little second but it’ll go away after 2-3 minutes. It’s a reminder that, hey, you better check yourself.” That’s what Cam Newton had to say about the “thumps” he can feel in his ankle.
When the Panthers lost Steve Smith, and a lot of other receivers over the off-season, I lost almost all hope of them getting back to the playoffs again this season. Now, for some reason I feel optimistic.
Rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin looks very promising, and I can’t wait to see him play. He is the definition of a red-zone target, at 6 foot 5, 240 pounds, and huge hands, it will be hard for Cam Newton to miss Benjamin in the red-zone.
