Charlotte Hornets Sign Ray McCallum and Mike Tobey to 2nd 10-Day Deals
After their first 10-day deals expired, the Charlotte Hornets have re-signed McCallum and Tobey to the second set of 10-day deals.
The Charlotte Hornets have decided to bring back Ray McCallum and Mike Tobey for their second 10-day deals after their first ones expired. (NBA.com/ Chris Haynes) Even though neither player saw any action on the court during their first stints, the team felt like they wanted to give each of them another shot to prove themselves. The backups will hope to do enough to stick to the team’s final roster for the remainder of the season.
These 10-day deals will actually last 11 days due to the players needing to play at least three games during 10-day contracts. The All-Star break will interrupt their deals so that is why they will last 11 days instead of 10 so that they encompass three games in total. (Keith Smith) The next 11 days includes games against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons.
After the match against the Pistons, the Hornets will need to decide on if they want to keep one or both of these players going forward. They will need to sign them for the remainder of the season if they want to keep them any longer this year. With no playing time for Charlotte between the both of them, it is hard to see why management would want to hold onto them.

Both players have been wildly successful in the NBA Developmental League this season. McCallum averaged 18.2 points per game, 7.5 assists per game and 6.0 rebounds per game with the Grand Rapids Drive this year. He played in 30 games with them before being called up from the D-League to the Hornets.
On the other hand, Tobey played with Charlotte’s D-League affiliate in the Greensboro Swarm. The big man averaged 11.0 points per game, 8.9 rebound per game and 1.3 blocks per game so far this season. He’s appeared in 29 games before being called up. Mike has been in the Hornets’ system from the summer league to training camp and eventually to Swarm.
It isn’t clear whether either of these players will stick around longer than these second 10-day deals. Their lack of playing time likely doesn’t bode well. Even with the team’s injury problems at their positions of point guard and center, neither McCallum or Tobey have been able to break into the rotation. Charlotte at least saw enough to give them a second shot. Hopefully, both get some playing time so that we can actually see them in action and they can prove what they can bring to the Hornets.

It will be interesting to see how these 10-day contracts play out because the Charlotte Hornets need to get a good look at these players before making a final decision. That’s tough to do when neither of them getting regular minutes in the rotation. Let’s see if Steve Clifford gives them any playing time at all over these next few games.
