With Ramon Sessions still out and Brian Roberts struggling, the Charlotte Hornets have signed Briante Weber to a second 10-day deal.

According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, “Charlotte guard Briante Weber is signing a second 10-day contract.” The point guard’s first 10-day deal was set to expire after the Charlotte Hornets‘ game against the Miami Heat. Even though his playing time has been limited with the team, he did enough to impress them.

During his short time with the Hornets, Weber has appeared in one game and even that was in a limited fashion as he only played for two minutes. He did score two points but other than that, Briante hasn’t gotten the chance to make an impact with Charlotte. He has been an emergency point guard option behind both Kemba Walker and Brian Roberts.

Now that the Hornets have signed the 24-year old to a second 10-day contract, they have a major decision lying ahead of them. Once this deal expires, the team must make a decision on whether or not to sign Weber for the remainder of the season. The undrafted guard is hoping to stick with Charlotte long-term but that may be hard to do as he has not been given the chance to prove himself on the court.

More from Swarm and Sting

It is a bit strange that Steve Clifford hasn’t yet used Briante on a regular basis. With Sessions out and Roberts struggling to put up quality number as Kemba’s backup, many have been calling for Weber to get his shot with the team. Even more so now that Charlotte has fallen farther out of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference.

The 6’2 point guard has bounced around the NBA as he has played for the Memphis Grizzlies, the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors over the past two seasons. He hasn’t been able to stick with any one team but a successful stint in the D-League earlier this season made Briante the top prospect out of the Developmental League. Many teams were hoping to sign Weber this season as they saw upside and promise in the former VCU player.

Even though he is mostly unproven at the NBA level, Briante deserves a shot with the Hornets. If they are going to sign him long-term, Charlotte should at least see what Weber can bring to the table by giving him some playing time as the backup point guard over the next week or so. With the crazy numbers that he put up in the D-League earlier this year, he at least deserves a chance.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Weber over the next 10 days. Briante’s playing time, or lack thereof, could be telling on if the Charlotte Hornets plan to sign him for the remainder of the season or not.
