Before signing with the Charlotte Hornets mid-season, Briante Weber was one of the top players in the NBA D-League and he was recognized for his play.

The NBA Developmental League’s year is coming to a close and they are announcing awards and All-NBA D-League teams for the 2016-17 season. Briante Weber of the Charlotte Hornets was named to the Second Team. The point guard was also named to the All-Defensive Team. (Dleague.NBA.com)

The VCU product only appeared in 31 games for the Sioux Falls Skyforce before being called up but he made his time in the D-League count. He averaged 16.5 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game and 7.3 assists per game. Even though he only played in a little more than half of the D-League season, Weber did enough to impress the voters.

Briante wasn’t a member of the Hornets’ D-League affiliate in the Greensboro Swarm this year but being a part of Charlotte’s roster at the end of the regular season, he is recognized as part of the team. The Hornets originally signed the 24-year old to two 10-day contracts and once they expired, the front office decided to sign him to a two-year deal.

More from Swarm and Sting

Once with Charlotte, Weber averaged 3.8 points per game, 1.7 rebounds per game and 1.2 assists per game in 13 outings with the team. Before coming to the Queen City, he played for the Golden State Warriors on two 10-day contracts.

His 11 double-doubles and league-leading five triple-doubles while in the D-League this season surely helped his case for being on the Second Team. He also led the league in steals per game at 3.3. That was a probably the main reason why he was named to the All-Defensive Team.

Although he spent half of the season in the NBA, Weber was well deserving of a spot on one of the All-NBA D-League teams. Briante was one of the best players in the D-League before being called up and his number speak for themselves.

The Second Team also included Josh Magette (Los Angeles), Abdel Nader (Maine), Alex Poythress (Fort Wayne) and Shawn Long (Delaware).

Quinn Cook (Canton), Vander Blue (Los Angeles), Keith Benson (Sioux Falls), Dakari Johnson (Oklahoma City) and Edy Tavares (Raptors 905) were all named to the First Team ahead of Weber.

The Team Team was rounded out by Marcus Georges-Hunt – Maine, Axel Toupane – Raptors 905, John Holland – Canton, Jalen Jones – Maine and Eric Moreland – Canton.

David Nwaba (Los Angeles), Eric Moreland (Canton), Keith Benson (Sioux Falls) and Edy Tavares (Raptors 905) joined Briante on the All-Defensive Team.

Vander Blue of the Los Angeles Defenders was named the D-League MVP for the 2016-17 season.

Congratulations to Briante Weber for receiving these honors. Looking ahead, he will be looking to impress the Charlotte Hornets enough this offseason in the summer league and during the preseason to make their regular season roster for next year. If he can play like he did in the D-League, that shouldn’t be a problem.
