The Charlotte Hornets have lost a prospect from their D-League affiliate as Archie Goodwin has signed a 10-day contract with the Nets.
According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, “The Brooklyn Nets are signing guard Archie Goodwin to a 10-day contract from D-League Greensboro.” The combo guard is being signed from the Charlotte Hornets‘ D-League affiliate in the Greensboro Swarm. He is officially the 40th D-League call-up of the 2016-17 NBA season.
Earlier this season, Greensboro acquired the D-League rights to Goodwin by claiming him off waivers. The former first round pick was given a second chance with the Swarm after he was released from the Phoenix Suns. His play with Greensboro was enough to impress the Nets as he will now get another shot in the NBA to prove himself.
Despite owning his D-League rights, the Hornets do not own Archie’s NBA rights. He is free to sign with any NBA team but if he does play in the D-League again after his 10-day contract expires, he will re-join the Swarm. Charlotte probably had hopes of developing Goodwin and maybe calling him up at some point in the near future but that hasn’t materialized yet.

In 34 games with Greensboro, the 22-year old averaged 17 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game. Archie was one of the top scorers on the team but he was only shooting 43.8% from the field and 23.5% from the three-point line in 32.7 minutes per game. He recorded three double-doubles during his time with the Swarm.
At such a young age, Goodwin still has plenty of time to grow into a productive NBA player as he looked like he was going to be while in Phoenix. The problem, like D-League expert Chris Reichert noted, is that Archie hasn’t developed that much since being with the Suns. It will be interesting to see how much playing time he gets with the Nets and if they will keep him longer than his original 10-day deal.
After his first contract is up, Brooklyn will have the option to either sign him to a second 10-day deal, sign him for the remainder of the season or release him back to the D-League to re-join the Swarm. If everything goes right for Goodwin, we might have seen his last game in Greensboro.

Also, if Archie is picked up by the Nets, I think it shows that the Greensboro Swarm did a good job developing him this season. It speaks to the sole purpose of the Charlotte Hornets’ D-League affiliate which is to grow the team’s young talent. Goodwin is an athletic player with loads of potential and while it would’ve been nice to see him with the Hornets, his future now lies in Brooklyn’s hands.
