Rumor: Ramon Sessions Unlikely to Re-Sign With the Charlotte Hornets
It looks like Ramon Sessions‘ second stint with the Charlotte Hornets may soon be over as he is “unlikely to re-sign” with the team.
According to RotoWorld.com, “Ramon Sessions [is] unlikely to re-sign w/ CHA.” After signing a two-year, $12.3 million deal last summer, the veteran point guard had a less than stellar first season back with the Charlotte Hornets. He not only struggled to stay healthy but also to produce at a high level while on the court.
The report adds “don’t expect the Hornets pick up Sessions’ player option for $6.2 million next season.” This comes after Charlotte’s general manager, Rich Cho, said that the team would address the backup point guard position this offseason. With his struggled, it makes sense for the Hornets to move on from Ramon.
The only problem is that he has a player option for next season. (REPORTEDLY) His contract situation isn’t quite clear as some sources have it as a team option while other have it as a player. Spotrac.com (one the most reliable site for NBA contracts) has Sessions’ deal with a player option for the 2017-18 season. This means that he could accept that $6.2 million for next year.

Sessions appeared in only 50 games for the Hornets before suffering a season-ending knee injury on February 1st against the Golden State Warriors. He averaged 6.2 points per game, 2.6 assists per game and 1.5 rebounds per game in 16.2 minutes per game. The 31-year old averaged career lows across the board while shooting only 38% from the field and 33.9% from the three-point line.
This was Ramon’s second stint with the team but things didn’t go as planned this time around. Eventually, Brian Roberts and Briante Weber took over the backup point guard role behind Kemba Walker. With Cho stating that the Hornets will address that role, it is safe to say his time with Charlotte is just about over.
The player option situation may be a bit tricky but if the two sides can come to an agreement, they can decline it on mutual terms. Having Sessions’ $6.2 million off the books will give them a little more leeway during free agency. The Hornets have almost no wiggle room with their cap space at the moment.

By no re-signing Ramon, it would also open up a roster spot. One thing that is for sure is that Sessions will not be the Charlotte Hornets’ backup point guard next season as they seem set on moving forward without him.
