The Charlotte Hornets are still searching for a third string point guard, Quinn Cook could be the one to fill that role for the team.

Ramon Sessions has signed with New York. Brian Roberts is going overseas. And Briante Weber was waived by the Charlotte Hornets. The team was able to sign Michael Carter-Williams to replace Sessions as the backup point guard but they still need to add a third player at that position to round out their roster. Quin Cook could be the answer.

Charlotte’s already worked out eight point guards in a free agent group on July 25th. There has been no indication that they will sign any of those eight PG’s and one of the most intriguing players in Demetrius Jackson was already picked up by the Houston Rockets.

Even though they didn’t work Cook out, he should still be on the Hornets’ radar. Quinn was actually waived by the New Orleans Pelicans the same day that Charlotte held their workout. Now that he’s available and has (somehow) cleared waivers, Charlotte should make strongly consider him as their next emergency point guard.

More from Swarm and Sting

The Duke product only played in 14 total games last season (five for the Mavericks and nine for the Pelicans). He managed to average 5.6 points per game and 1.9 assists while shooting 50% from the field and 42.3% from the three-point line. In his most recent play, Cook put up an impressive stat line at the Las Vegas Summer League with 20.6 PPG, 4.8 APG, 3.6 RPG and 55.1% from the field.

After that strong showing, most expected New Orleans to hold onto the 24-year old. That didn’t happen and now any team is free to sign the unrestricted free agent. Quinn would be a relatively cheap option for Charlotte as he could probably be signed to a minimum contract.

Cook has shown promise in limited appearances during his professional career. In two seasons with the Canton Charge of the G-League, he averaged 22.6 PPG and 6.7 APG. He’s proven that he has what it takes to excel against players in G-League and in summer league. Now it is time for him to get a chance at the NBA level.

The 6’2 guard can do it all. He is a good shooter which would be a good change of pace from MCW if need be. Although he is a score first point, he has good vision and can distribute the ball pretty well.

Looking at who is left on the open market this offseason, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better and more complete point guard than Cook. In my opinion, this should be an easy decision for the Charlotte Hornets. They should sign Quinn because he has recent success and is the best option left. Unless another team scoops him up, Rich Cho should already be calling the player who used to call North Carolina home.
