The Charlotte Hornets have recently released a team statement that stands against discrimination in the form of North Carolina’s Anti-LGBT law.

The Charlotte Hornets have recently released a team statement that shows their stance against discrimination and towards North Carolina’s Anti-LGBT law. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the law and how it may impact the 2017 NBA All-Star Game that will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina next season.

The Anti-LGBT law declares that “state law overrides all local ordinances concerning wages, employment and public accommodations. Thus, the law now bars local municipalities from creating their own rules prohibiting discrimination in public places based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Though North Carolina does have a statewide nondiscrimination law, it does not include specific protections for LGBTQ people.”

Here is the Charlotte Hornets team statement in regards to the Anti-LGBT law passed in North Carolina:

“The Charlotte Hornets and Hornets Sports & Entertainment are opposed to discrimination in any form, and we have always sought to provide an inclusive environment. As has been the case since the building opened, we will continue to ensure that all fans, players and employees feel welcome while at work or attending NBA games and events at Time Warner Cable Arena.”

This was a necessary step for the team to take as the law allows business owners to have the choice to discriminate against LGBT. The Hornets are saying that they won’t discriminate.

This controversial law could potentially impact the 2017 NBA All-Star Game that many in North Carolina have been looking forward to. The team and organization have made a massive attempt to prepare for the All-Star game next season at Time Warner Cable Arena.

This is from the Washington Times in a recent article that was posted on their website:

“The NBA says it is “deeply concerned” about a North Carolina law it views as discriminatory toward gays and says it doesn’t know if it can successfully host the All-Star Game in Charlotte next season.

On Thursday, the league joined those opposing the state’s “Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act,” which has been criticized because it allows businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians.”

“North Carolina is now at risk of losing $4.5 billion of federal funding, according to a statement from the Human Rights Campaign, which claimed the new law is in “direct violation” of Title IX, a federal non-discrimination act.” (ABC News)

It is crazy that the world we live in still has people and laws that are discriminatory against a minority group. You would think that we have come a long way from the days of racism and segregation but that is not the case.

You can easily see throughout the United States of America how much racism, prejudice, and ignorance there is towards certain groups of people. We should be passed things like this but politicians and bigots elicit fear into those who are ignorant of what is different.

Proponents of North Carolina’s controversial law said that, “it was necessary to protect the safety of women and children from “radical” action by Charlotte.

Critics of Charlotte’s ordinance said it could have allowed men who may be sexual offenders to enter a woman’s restroom or locker room by claiming a transgender identity.”

This is complete nonsense as it may have been a true argument, opponents of the bill argue that “the bill is discriminatory, interferes with a local government’s rights and could put the state’s economy at risk.

Many opponents pointed out that there are no known instances of a sexual predator dressing up as women to commit a crime and then using similar city ordinances as a legal defense.”

This is just yet another moment in American history where people have taken the rights away from a group of human beings who did not do anything to deserve that. We as people can not move forward until backwards ways of thinking are eliminated from society.
