2015 Rd. 1 Pick 9 Frank Kaminsky

By now you might’ve realized that the Charlotte brain trust has a thing for Big 10 power forwards. Frank Kaminsky being taken 9th made him the 3rd such player to be drafted to Charlotte in the past three first rounds, and was also a controversial pick for many reasons. The first reason is the reported “Godfather” offer of 6 draft picks that the Boston Celtics admitted to offering the Hornets for the 9th pick (in order to draft Justise Winslow).

The other reasons this pick is controversial is because of the other players available when Kaminsky was drafted. Myles Turner and Devin Booker were both still on the board when Kaminsky was drafted, and both were thought to have more potential but less ability to contribute right away. Fast forward a season and Kaminsky averaged solid numbers while having a small role on a successful team.

Frank showed long range shooting ability that will no doubt improve from the 34% he shot, and some playmaking ability as well. Despite this Frank didn’t have the impressive debut season that Turner and Booker both enjoyed. I am still a bit salty about this selection (as you can probably tell), but Frank did have a solid debut in Charlotte while becoming the best social media follow on the team. This doesn’t change that there were better options on the board when he was drafted and that his ceiling may stop around good role player.

Pick Grade: C+
