After a quietly impressive rookie campaign, Frank Kaminsky will be looking to have a breakout season in 2016 for the Charlotte Hornets.

Charlotte Hornets’ second year big man, Frank Kaminsky, will be looking to have a breakout season in 2016-17. Even though he underwent minor surgery on his chest this offseason, Kaminsky has been working hard to improve his game this summer. He missed the Orlando Pro Summer League because of the surgery but he is still poised to have a breakout season.

After being selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Hornets, many questioned Frank Kaminsky’s game and if it translated well to the NBA level. Critics still point to his lack of athleticism/speed, trouble rebounding, and poor offensive low post game. Few thought he would have the season that he did last year but “The Tank” proved that he belonged in the league.

The 23-year old power forward averaged 7.5 points per game, 4.1 redounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game in his rookie season. He also shot 41% from the field, 33.7% from the three-point line, and 73% from the free throw line. Kaminsky appeared in 81 games for Charlotte and averaged 21.1 minutes per game.

1. Experience

The former Wisconsin Badger gained vital experience last season behind Marvin Williams and Al Jefferson. He’s accustomed to coming off of the bench as he only started three games last year playing behind more experienced players. Having veterans like Marvin and Big Al were the perfect teachers for Kaminsky to learn from.

After playing more than 20 minutes a game, Frank showed some major improvements towards the end of last season. Kaminsky had struggles to start his rookie season but after some growing pains, he showcased his talents and skill set. His outstanding play was evident during the playoffs when he had some of his best games of the year.

That postseason experience should give Kaminsky confidence heading into 2016. He is also ahead of most second year players in terms of experience because of his four years in college at the University of Wisconsin. Frank’s added experience of the style of play in the NBA should help him have a breakout season.

2. More Playing Time/Expanded Role

The 7’0 power forward will now have the chance to prove himself even more this season after the losses of Al Jefferson and Tyler Hansbrough. The team brought in Roy Hibbert but Kaminsky will be the first big man off of the bench as he takes Big Al’s role. Frank has the height and versatility to play the center position. Head coach, Steve Clifford, did not play him at center a lot last year because of his smaller size and lack of experience.

After working hard this offseason, it is clear that the Lislie, Illinois native added some more weight and muscle. This will allow him to get more playing time at both power forward and center with the team going forward. Kaminsky should only see his playing time go up in year two after averaging 21 minutes per game in his rookie season.

Frank gained the trust of the coaching staff and even Michael Jordan after his play last year in the playoffs. It wouldn’t be surprising if he plays more with the first unit and even closes out more games this season. It isn’t clear how much playing time he will be given this year but with his expanded role, he should get more than last season.

3. Pressure to Perform

With all the criticism surrounding Kaminsky before last year began, the pressure will only grow this season as he tries to build on his rookie season. Frank responded to his detractors with his surprising play last year but will he be able to do it again? Being a lottery pick comes with a lot of pressure to not become a bust in the NBA.

Kaminsky produced when it mattered the most and he came through in the clutch moments. His play in the postseason against the Miami Heat showed that he could get the job done at this level against almost any opponent. Frank is also addressing what he most needs to improve on as he said in a recent interview that he’s “got to be a better defender.” He’s aware of the added pressure that is on him and the team this season.

These are only a few reasons why Frank Kaminsky will breakout in the 2016-17 season. He is also more familiar with the team’s system and his style of play fits perfectly with what Steve Clifford is trying to do. The Charlotte Hornets will be hoping that he will continue to show improvement.
