8. Re-Signing Marvin Williams

July 2nd, 2016

After a career-season last year, the Hornets made the easy decision of re-signing their starting power forward. They gave Marvin a huge four-year, $54.5 million deal which was actually less than what many had expected. Having the leader of the team return was a move everyone wanted but getting it done quickly was the biggest takeaway.

Steve Clifford has labeled Marvin as the “defensive leader” and compared him to the likes of Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly. Williams was a bit of a bust over his first nine seasons in the NBA but he finally found his niche in Charlotte. His ability to stretch the floor allows Kemba Walker to attack the rim. It has really opened up the full potential of not only Kemba and Marvin but for the team as a whole.

Even at 30-years old, Williams still has plenty to offer and will likely be a contributor for years to come. Marvin made it clear that he wanted to be back in Charlotte before free agency started but there was still some outside interest once the summer hit. Credit to the organization for getting the contract done and at a team-friendly price.

Marvin’s play hasn’t been up to par so far this season but he is still a productive player that does the dirty work for the team. He is still a valuable leader and gives them a stretch four threat as well as an athletic option as a big man. This as an underrated move in 2016 but a good re-signing for Charlotte.
