After completing two 10-day contracts with the team, the Charlotte Hornets have decided to sign Briante Weber to a two-year deal.
According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, “Charlotte guard Briante Weber has agreed to a two-year deal with the Hornets.” The Charlotte Hornets have now committed long term to the 24-year old point guard after his second 10-day contract expired. It doesn’t come as that much of a surprise as Steve Clifford has given Briante more minutes as of late.
The two-year deal is expected to only be partially guaranteed for the second season. With that being said, Weber is expected to a fair shot to make the team. He will close out this season as the Hornets’ backup point guard and there is an opportunity for him to battle for a roster spot during the summer and training camp.
Charlotte is Briante’s fourth NBA team as he has previously spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Miami Heat and even the Golden State Warriors earlier this year. Although, this is only his second full contract as his time with the Griz and the Dubs was spent on 10-day deals. He will now look to stick with his new team.

In four games with the Hornets this season, Weber is averaging 4.0 points per game, 1.5 rebounds per game and 1.0 assists per game. The 6’2 guard scored a season-high eight points against the Indiana Pacers in his most recent outing. After this signing, the Hornets’ roster now sits at a maximum 15 players.
After not playing in more than just a limited fashion, Briante has slowly worked his way into the backup point guard role. Coach Clifford has shifted from using Brian Roberts as the backup and has now moved on to Weber. The VCU product will now close out the season as Kemba Walker‘s backup.
By committing to Weber, Charlotte’s added another promising young player to their squad. While his professional career stalled a bit as he recovered from a torn ACL suffered in college, Briante has worked hard to turn things around. The undrafted player was ranked as the #1 overall prospect in the D-League earlier this season.
Next: Weber to Close Out the Season as the Backup PG
It will be interesting to see how Weber plays down the stretch of the season as he closes out the year with the Hornets. Not only that but Briante’s play in the summer league and preseason will be key in his pursuit of making the team next season. Charlotte’s point guard depth isn’t great so the opportunity is there for him to impress the front office and coaching staff.
