After firing their longtime head coach, Georgetown may look towards Hoyas’ legend and current Charlotte Hornets’ associate, Patrick Ewing, to take over.

Patrick Ewing has been a part of the Charlotte Hornets‘ coaching staff since 2013 but it appears more and more likely that his run with the team will soon be coming to an end. He has already garnered interest from a number of NBA teams regarding their head coaching vacancies last summer and more interviews are sure to come his way this offseason.

Even though he remains committed to getting a head coaching gig at the NBA level, other opportunities have opened up for the hall-of-fame big man. His alma mater, Georgetown, recently fired their longtime head coach in John Thompson III after 13 years at the college. Now, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical is reporting that “Georgetown officials plan to consider the head-coaching candidacy of the university’s most legendary basketball alumnus, Patrick Ewing”

Ewing is not only an NBA legend but he is a Hoyas’ legend as well. After spending four years at the school, Patrick won a National Championship in 1984, was named the national player of the year in 1985 and was a three-time first-team all-American. His history with Georgetown speaks for itself but it now looks like he has a chance to further that legacy by becoming their next head coach.

More from Swarm and Sting

A head coaching job seems to be the next step in Ewing’s career after spending 15 seasons assistant coach in the NBA with the Washington Wizards, the Houston Rockets and the Orlando Magic along with the Hornets. Patrick most recently interviewed with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Sacramento Kings this past summer. He even got a chance to interview for the then-Bobcats’ head coaching job alongside Steve Clifford but Coach Cliff ended up getting the gig.

The 54-year old has a resume full of accolades and it is only a matter of time before he gets a shot to be the head coach somewhere. It remains to be seen if it will be in the NBA or at the college level. It wouldn’t be all that surprising for him to take the Georgetown job despite his wanting to coach in the NBA.

Although it is unclear what Ewing will do at this time, this is just another option that has been added to his list. There will probably be a number of NBA teams that will interview Patrick for their head coaching jobs this summer after he was close to getting the Kings’ gig last offseason. (Woj) Whatever the case may be, he likely won’t be in Charlotte as an assistant for too much longer.

Ewing has more than one link to Georgetown as his son was on John Thompson III’s staff. Woj says that Patrick “won’t pursue job before significant thought.” It will be interesting to see what happens this summer but it looks likely that the Charlotte Hornets’ will lose their associate head coach. Good thing they have one of the top assistants in Stephen Silas waiting in the wings.
