The Charlotte Hornets may want to keep a close eye on Perry Ellis as the Greensboro Swarm big man dominated during the D-League Elite Mini-Camp.

According to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.com, “Perry Ellis really standing out in 2nd day of @nbadleague Elite Mini-Camp. Shooting ball extremely well. 25 points (4/6 3P) in first game.” Ellis was one of three players from the Charlotte Hornets‘ D-League affiliate with Cat Barber and Rasheed Sulaimon also participating. The Greensboro Swarm were well represented at the camp.

The Chicago-based camp had 40 of the best D-League players take part in multiple drills and scrimmages so that NBA scouts could get a look at these prospects before the NBA Draft Combine is held. Perry certainly made the most of this opportunity as he showcased his skillset on a pretty big stage.

Ellis played in a total of four games at the camp and he managed to record 18 points and four rebounds in his first outing, 17 points and five boards in Game 2, the 25 points in Game 3 and 20 points in his final appearance. Totaling his numbers, the 23-year old averaged 20 points which led the entire camp.

More from Swarm and Sting

In 50 games with the Swarm this past D-League season, Perry averaged only 9.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game while shooting 45.1% from the field and 37.6% from three. He also put up three double-doubles. His numbers look somewhat pedestrian compared to the breakout stats Ellis put up during the camp.

The Kansas’ product only managed to score 25 points only once this season so it is pretty incredible that he put up 25 against the D-League’s elite. With his performances, Ellis probably caught the attention of a few scouts.

Taking a quick look at Barber and Sulaimon, they had decent showing during the event. Cat averaged 7.2 points and 4.2 assists in his four games while Rasheed averaged 8.7 points and 4.0 assists. Impressively enough, Sulaimon, a forward, recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in one outing.

If Perry continues to play like he did during the elite mini-camp, he should expect a call-up to the NBA. It’s pretty surprising that he was able to outperform every other prospect but Ellis was able to help make an even bigger name for himself. If nothing else, he should get more playing time next year.
