The projected lottery pick from Louisville is scheduled to workout for the Charlotte Hornets before June 22nd.

In a recent interview with WFNZ, Donovan Mitchell said that “I met with Hornets at combine. Will workout for them next week.” This means that he will meet with the Charlotte Hornets during the week from June 11th to June 17th. The shooting guard is a projected lottery pick in this year’s draft.

During the interview, Mitchell dropped a number of gems about him potentially playing for the Hornets. He talked about his versatility allowing him to play in a lineup with two ball handlers (i.e. with Kemba Walker) and the best part was when he said “Kemba is the star. He needs guys to make shots. He also shouldn’t guard the best guy all the time. Let me do that.” The Louisville product also mentioned that he’s known Walker for a long time.

DraftExpress.com projects Donovan to be selected 12th overall by the Detroit Pistons in their latest mock. That is one spot after the Hornets pick at No. 11. He is the top sophomore in this year’s draft class and 11th among all prospects.

More from Swarm and Sting

At the NBA Draft Combine, the 6’3 guard weighed in at 211 pounds with a 6’10” wingspan and an 8’1″ standing reach. His athleticism was also on display when he recorded a 36.5″ no step vert and a 40.5″ max vertical. Looking at his length and intangibles, Mitchell has the physical tools to be successful at the NBA level.

During his second year in college, the New York native averaged 15.6 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.1 steals as he helped lead Lousiville to a 25-9 record. The 20-year old was the team’s leading scorer, second in assists and first in steals.

There’s a good chance that Mitchell will still be on the board when the Hornets select at 11. This is an important workout for Donovan and the team.

If he is able to impress Rich Cho, Michael Jordan and Steve Clifford, Charlotte will have a decision to make on draft night.

With the NBA Draft right around the corner, the team’s pre-draft workouts are in full swing. They hosted six prospects in their first workout and are scheduled to meet with a number of other players including Justin Patton, P.J. Dozier and Derrick White. Mitchell is by far the biggest name announced so far.

The Charlotte Hornets even worked out Mitchell’s teammate at Louisville in Magok Mathiang. On paper, Donovan looks like he would be a good fit with the team. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had him high on their draft board.
