It looks like Ramon Sessions‘ time with the Charlotte Hornets is up as his $6.27 million team option won’t be picked up for the 2017-18 season.

According to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer, the Charlotte Hornets will pass on Ramon Sessions’ team option for next season. He was set to be owed $6.27 million next year. After only one year back in the Queen City, the veteran point guard’s second stint with the team will already be over. His 2016-17 season was clouded with poor play and injuries.

With the Hornets declining his option, Ramon will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. They waited until the last possible minute to decline his option as Charlotte had a slight hope that maybe a team would trade for the 6’3 point guard.

Sessions only managed to average 6.2 points per game, 2.6 assists per game and 1.5 rebounds per game this past season. Those were all career lows for the backup point guard and it was clear that Steve Clifford had lost some faith in him.

More from Swarm and Sting

The 31-year old was held to only 50 games after suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee that kept him out for the second half of the season. Those 50 appearances he made were the lowest since his rookie year in the NBA.  Even before the injury, Ramon wasn’t performing very well

Briante Weber and Brian Roberts closed out the season backing up Kemba Walker. Rich Cho has already made it clear that the team is targeting a quality backup point guard in free agency. Even with limited cap space, the organization felt like there would be better options this summer than retaining Sessions.

Ramon has played a total of three seasons in Charlotte throughout his career but a reunion in the future is highly unlikely. The former second-round pick will now look to find a new home as he hopes to latch onto a team’s roster. He has played for seven different teams over the course of his professional career.

Going forward, Sessions will probably more of a third-string point guard in the NBA. As for the Charlotte Hornets, they will look to upgrade their bench and sign a free agent point guard or trade for one this offseason.
