Charlotte Hornets fans rejoiced on draft day when Malik Monk fell to the 11th spot. Many consider him quite the steal at that pick. Can he surpass their expectations and be the top rookie next year?

The Charlotte Hornets have had a questionable history with the NBA draft over the years. One could count on their hands the number of players the team has drafted over the years that have made a significant impact. Yet, for the first time since drafting Kemba Walker, the Hornets have a player who could really make a name for himself.

So, what makes Malik Monk so special? Well, he gives the Hornets a scoring threat the team drastically needed, whether he starts or not. In his only year at Kentucky, he averaged just under 20 points per game (including scoring 47 against the eventual National Champion University of North Carolina).

Couple that with shooting percentages of 49.7%  from two and 39.7% from three during his freshman season, and you have reason to believe Monk could be a guy who averages 12-15 points a game if utilized correctly.

He could legitimately be one of the top three or four scorers on the team. In a weakened Eastern Conference, Monk could help elevate the Hornets into a top three or four team. Whether that hurts or helps his cause depends on your viewpoint.

Nevertheless, Monk should have an immediate impact on a team that only featured two players that scored over 15 points a game. He does have a few knocks, however. At only 6’3″, he’ll have a tough time defending taller guards. He doesn’t really have the size or physicality to attack the rim while maintaining contact, as well.

That being said, playing alongside Kemba could mask some of his shortcomings. Kemba’s style of play lends itself to creating shots for less physical players. Whether driving to the basket or drawing double teams, Kemba can find Monk for open looks.

In my opinion, Steve Clifford is the type of coach that could very well bring out the best in Monk. He’ll need to focus on Monk getting better defensively and using his athleticism to bother defenders.

Still, the upside on Monk is high and if fan reactions are anything to go by, he’ll be a very welcome addition. The potential is there for Monk to be Rookie of the Year, but it won’t be easy. He’ll have to outplay the likes of Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball, but he certainly has the tools.
