After playing in 13 games with the Charlotte Hornets this past season, the team decided to waive the 24-year old point guard.
The Charlotte Hornets announced that they have officially waived Briante Weber. (HornetsPR) His contract for the 2017-18 season would’ve become fully guaranteed on August 1st. The team decided to release the point guard before the deadline and not take a cap hit.
Weber was originally signed to a 10-day contract by the Hornets on February 27th and then to a second 10-day deal on March 9th. He impressed the team enough to earn a partially guaranteed two-year deal.
During his time with Charlotte, Briante appeared in 13 games for the team. He averaged 3.8 points per game, 1.7 rebounds per game and 1.2 assists per game in limited minutes. The 6’2 point guard managed to shoot 43.5% from the field, 14.3% from three and 69.2% from the free throw line.

Weber made a name for himself in the G-League as one of the, if not, the top prospect last season. He was signed by the Golden State Warriors before being picked up by the Hornets. It is unclear what the next move if for Briante but considering that a number of teams were looking to add him last year, it’s safe to say that he will be picked up this summer.
The VCU product quickly became a fan favorite because of defensive intensity. While he was impressive off the ball, he, unfortunately, lacked a consistent outside shot.
There were plenty of signs pointing to Weber’s eventual release. His somewhat disappointing display at the Orlando Pro Summer League didn’t help his case to make the Hornets’ roster. Plus, the team recently worked out eight free agent point guards, essentially signaling their intentions to waive Briante.
Although it is unclear who Charlotte will sign to replace Weber, it will probably be one of the players they worked out which included Marcus Paige, J.J. Frazier, Norris Cole, Isaiah Canaan, Donald Sloan, Demetrius Jackson, Jared Cunningham and Nick Johnson. There are also a number of other players still on the market who they could bring in.
Next: Briante Weber is a special talent
The Charlotte Hornets now only have two point guards on their roster in Kemba Walker and Michael Carter-Williams. Even though Steve Clifford has teased playing Malik Monk at the one, expect the team to sign a third string/emergency point guard before training camp.
