Buzz City Beat: Charlotte Hornets big man is breaking records, Malik Monk interview

CHARLOTTE, NC - OCTOBER 25: Malik Monk
CHARLOTTE, NC - OCTOBER 25: Malik Monk

Buzz City Beat is Swarm and Sting’s one stop for the best articles from around the internet surrounding the Charlotte Hornets.

Kemba Walker joined Dell Curry as the only other Charlotte player to make 800 career three’s in a Hornets’ uniform. In this edition of Buzz City Beat, we look at how well Dwight Howard is playing for the Charlotte Hornets, Malik Monk thinking the NBA is boring and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist‘s regular-season debut.

Dwight Howard is grabbing all the rebounds (ESPN.com)

"In four games this season, Howard has collected 71 rebounds. That’s not only the highest total by any Charlotte player over his first four career games with the team or his first four games of a season. It matches the most rebounds by a player in franchise history over any four-game span."

The last player to grab 71 rebounds through four games for the Hornets was Emeka Okafor in 2007. Although it’s only a very small sample size, Howard is averaging 17.8 rebounds per game which would be the highest mark of his career if he continued this level of production throughout the season. It will be interesting to see how long Dwight can keep this up for.

Howard actually leads the league in total rebounds with 71 grabbed through four games. The other four players in the top-five have played one more game than Dwight. Charlotte has a dominant big man that is owning the boards and cleaning the glass on both ends of the floor every chance he gets.

Malik Monk interview (CBSsports.com)

"“It’s boring. Boring is good, though,” Monk said. “You fly here, you get to the hotel, don’t do nothing until game time. I’m in my hotel room watching highlights, watching movies, stuff like that. It’s just boring. But in the summertime it’s fun because you get to do other stuff and you got a little bit of money, you can vacation, go to places. In season is boring, but that’s good, so you won’t be out getting in trouble, club life, stuff like that.”"

It’s crazy to think that being in the NBA can be boring. I’m sure the Hornets’ first-round pick loves playing but off the court stuff must get a little tiring. Being forced to fly on a plane almost every night and sleep in a different city/room can be viewed as either amazing or annoying. I guess if you’re not in the NBA, you don’t  know how boring it can actually be.

The rookie added that the most important thing for him is to get comfortable with the system so that he knows how to play, where to be and when to get his shots. Monk also picked Jayson Tatum to win Rookie of the Year. After three subpar outings, Malik had his best game as a pro against the Nuggets as he put up a career-high 17 points.

MKG makes season debut (RotoWorld.com)

"Michael Kidd-Gilchrist made his season debut on Wednesday, scoring two points on 1-of-6 shooting in 11 minutes of action."

Next: 4 takeaways from Charlotte's blowout win over Denver

Being on a minutes restriction (seven minutes each half), MKG came out aggressive and got plenty of shots up. Although he didn’t shoot well, this is a step in the right direction as Kidd-Gilchrist looks to return to the top of his game. He actually tried to sneak back into the game during the closing minutes to play during garbage time.
