Charlotte Hornets: Greensboro Swarm add Archie Goodwin
Archie Goodwin is set to return to the Greensboro Swarm as the Charlotte Hornets’ G-League affiliate looks to strengthen their roster.
The Greensboro Swarm have announced that they’ve acquired Archie Goodwin as a returning rights player. After a bit of a slow start to the season, the Charlotte Hornets‘ G-League affiliate is bringing back a player who played well for them last season. This is the second player that the team has re-acquired this season with the other being Cat Barber.
Goodwin was originally drafted back in 2013 with the 29th overall pick by the Suns. After three subpar seasons in Phoenix, they waived the once promising prospect. He then played in three games with the New Orleans Pelicans before being waived and signing with the NBA G-League and eventually joining Greensboro. He played so well with the Hornets’ affiliate that the Brooklyn Nets signed him to a multi-year deal after two 10-day contracts.
In 34 games with the Swarm, the Kentucky product averaged 17.0 points per game, 5.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He managed to shoot 43.8% from the field, 23.5% from three and 72.4% from the free throw line. Archie also recorded three double-doubles.

Looking at Greensboro’s current roster, they need all the help they can get. They are 5-10 and are second to last in the Eastern Conference. Only the Salt Lake City Stars and the Deleware 87ers have a worse record than the Swarm so far this season.
This acquisition will give Greensboro a consistent scorer. Two of their best player has been Jalen Jones and Charles Cooke. The only problem is that both of them are two-way players for the New Orleans Pelicans which means they split their time between the Swarm and their parent club.
The 6’5 combo guard spent the start of the 2017-18 season with the Portland Trail Blazers but was waived after only five preseason games. At only 23-years old, Goodwin still has plenty of room left to grow and develop. His ceiling is still pretty high and he could be a player that Charlotte tries to develop within their system to eventually call up later on.
The talent is clearly there with Archie. There was a lot of hype surrounding him coming out of college but he hasn’t yet been able to realize his full potential at the professional level. He is a super athletic player than can use his athleticism and strength to get to the basket. If he expands his game to include more playmaking skills and outside shooting, there’s a good chance he could be back in the NBA sooner rather than later.
We’ll have to wait and see if Goodwin can have enough of a positive impact to help turn around the Greensboro Swarm’s season. If he plays well enough, Archie may even earn a 10-day contract from the Charlotte Hornets or another NBA team.
