Charlotte Hornets fall to the Dallas Mavericks at home, 115-111

Kemba Walker‘s heroic efforts weren’t enough as the Charlotte Hornets lost at home to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Charlotte Hornets (15-24) were defeated by the Dallas Mavericks (15-28) as their two-game win streak was put to an end. Kemba Walker’s 41 points weren’t enough to overcome the Mavs as he got little help from his supporting cast. Harrison Barnes and Yogi Ferrell combined for 47 points and made a combined 10 three-point shots.

Cody Zeller missed his 16th consecutive game but he was seen getting some shots up before the game. He is nearing the six-week return timetable that he was given after undergoing surgery on his left knee. Dwayne Bacon was not with the team for this game as he is on assignment with the Greensboro Swarm in the G-League.

Game Story

The game was lost at the three-point line and at the free throw line. Dallas made 15 three’s compared to only 10 for Charlotte while Dwight Howard missed 13 free throws. The second quarter was the turning point in the game as it was the only quarter in which Charlotte was outscored by Dallas. The Mavs outscored the Hornets by 15 points in the second period. This game featured five ties and three lead changes.

Player of the Game

Kemba Walker finished with a game-high 41 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds. The all-star point guard shot 57.1% (16-28) from the field and added three steals to his stat line. He was one of only three Hornets’ players to not have a negative +/- in this game.

Dwight Howard grabbed a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four blocks but he only managed to shoot 5-18 from the free throw line. Jeremy Lamb added 12 points and four boards off of the bench while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 11 points. Frank Kaminsky rounded out Charlotte’s double-digit scorers as he put up 10 points.

The Mavericks were led by Harrison Barnes who ended the game with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Yogi Ferrell chipped in with 22 points with seven made three’s while Dirk Nowitzki turned back the clock a bit to score 19 points in this one. Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. had 15 points and J.J. Barea scored 12 off of the bench.

With the loss, Charlotte falls to 0-1 in their season series against Dallas. Thier second and final matchup this year will be in Texas on March 24th. The Hornets’ two-game win streak versus the Mavs was snapped with this defeat.

Next: Road trip success could be the turning point for Charlotte

In their next game, the Hornets will host the Utah Jazz on Friday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m. EST. It will be the first meeting of the season between the two sides. Charlotte will look to bounce back and pick up a solid win over a Jazz team that struggled on the road so far this season.
