Ranking Charlotte Hornets players by their college careers
8. Treveon Graham– VCU
Stats: 13.4 PPG, 5.8 RPG
Treveon is one of the very few Hornets to have played four full seasons in college. In each of those seasons, VCU made the NCAA tourney and twice they advanced to the second round.
In his last three seasons, Treveon was top 10 in the A-10 in just about every category imaginable. His defense was solid as always, his rebounding was great, and his scoring efficiency was just as great. In the ‘14-’15 season he was even on the Preseason Wooden Award watch list.
Had he been on that VCU final four team from the year before he got there, he’d be even higher on the list.
7. Cody Zeller– Indiana
Stats: 16.1 PPG, 7.3 RPG
In his two seasons at Indiana, Cody did enough to get drafted 4th overall in the 2013 draft. His slight improvement from his freshman to sophomore year was enough for him to be selected as a consensus 2nd team All-American and a Wooden Award finalist.
Indiana was eliminated in the Sweet 16 both seasons with Cody, and in his sophomore run, he didn’t have all that great of a tournament. Aside from that, he and Victor Oladipo are two of the best players to come through that university in a long time.
6. Malik Monk– Kentucky
Stats: 19.8 PPG, 39.7 3P%
Malik Monk rose to stardom very quickly at Kentucky last season. During a non-conference game against UNC, he erupted for 47 points. He didn’t cool down from there either, he then went on to have 3 30+ point games in SEC play.
Those explosive outbursts helped him be voted a 2nd Team All-American and SEC Player of the Year. The awards didn’t stop there, after missing out on the Wooden Award he still won the Jerry West Award, given to the country’s top shooting guard.
As always, Monk was apart of a Kentucky team that took a deep run into the tournament. In the Elite 8 against UNC again, he hit another big three to tie the game. This time, however, UNC was able to storm down the court for a heartbreaking buzzer beater. Kentucky has seen plenty of Freshman come and go, Monk won’t be one they forget about.
