Jerry Stackhouse has emerged as a candidate to land the Charlotte Hornets’ vacant head coaching job.

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, the Charlotte Hornets are one of three teams interested in Jerry Stackhouse. The former NBA All-Star is currently the head coach of the Raptors 905 which is Toronto’s G-League affiliate. He’s viewed as one of the top head coaching prospects.

Bondy tweeted that “Jerry Stackhouse, whose reps have been contacted by the Knicks, is also a candidate for the Magic job and reportedly the Hornets job.” The New York Knicks and Orlando Magic also fired their head coaches (Jeff Hornacek and Frank Vogel) at the end of the season. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, NY is set to meet with Stackhouse.

Charlotte’s looking to replace Steve Clifford who had been their head coach for the past five seasons. New general manager Mitch Kupchak has already made a number of changes to the organization including letting go of most of their training staff and analytics department.

As for Stackhouse, he has received a lot of attention as an up-and-coming head coach. He started his coaching career in 2015 as an assistant with the Raptors. Jerry has been coaching the Raptors 905 since 2016. He was named the G-League Coach of the Year in 2017 as he led his side to the G-League Championship.

It’s worth noting that Stackhouse is a North Carolina native and played at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in college where both owner Michael Jordan and GM Mitch Kupchak went. Jerry also played alongside MJ for one season with the Washington Wizards in 2002-03.

The Hornets have already been linked with former Memphis Grizzlies‘ head coach David Fizdale and current San Antonio Spurs‘ assistant Ettore Messina. Charlotte has received permission to interview Messina while it’s believed that Fizdale will have better coaching options elsewhere.

It’s unclear who else the Hornets are targeting but some other possible names are Charlotte assistant Stephen Silas, Atlanta Hawks‘ assistant Darvin Ham and former Cleveland Cavaliers‘ coach David Blatt.
