The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s leading scorer is reportedly set to workout for the Charlotte Hornets.

According to Clevis Murray of The Athletic, Tyler Nelson will workout for the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday (June 10th). He has already met with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics will host him on Saturday (June 9th). The 22-year old was one of the top scorers in college basketball this past year.

Tyler is projected to be either a second-round pick or go undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft. Charlotte currently holds one second-round pick this year at the tail end of the draft. (No. 55) If he goes undrafted, the Hornets could always add him to their summer league team or sign him as an undrafted free agent.

He played four years at Fairfield University. During his senior campaign, Nelson averaged 22.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 42% from the field, 35.3% from three and 88% from the free throw line in 36.5 minutes per game. He led the Stags in scoring and three’s made. Tyler also ranked second on the team in assists, second in steals and third in rebounds.

Nelson’s 22.2 PPG led the MAAC and was good enough for 11th among all Division 1 Men’s Basketball players. He was first in the MAAC in minutes, first in field goals, first in three’s and first in points produced. The Bradford, Massachusetts native ended his career as the MAAC leader in points produced.

Tyler’s main strength is obviously his scoring ability. He was able to score from just about anywhere on the floor during college. It will be interesting to see how/if his scoring will transition to the professional level. The guard really came into his own during his Senior year and his draft stock has never been higher than it is right now.

At 6’3 and 180 pounds, he will likely need to be a point guard at the next level because he doesn’t have the ideal size of an NBA shooting guard. Nelson isn’t an exceptional athlete, lacks a great first step and is far from an elite defender. (NBAScoutingLive.com) He has a number of areas where he needs to improve on.

With that being said, his scoring ability can’t be overlooked and should be enough to earn him an invite to a team’s Summer League roster.

The Fairfield Stags’ all-time leading scorer will look to make an impact during his pre-draft workout with the Queen City team. The Charlotte Hornets have already worked out a number of prospects with the most noteworthy being Mikal Bridges, Lonnie Walker IV and Moritz Wagner.
