The Charlotte Hornets are set to bring in one of the Big Ten’s best three-point shooters for a pre-draft workout.

According to GoldAndBlack.com, Dakota Mathias will work out for the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday. The guard spent four years in college at Purdue University. He is now looking to improve his draft stock ahead of the 2018 NBA Draft which takes place on June 21st.

Mathias is also set to meet with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Detroit Pistons and the Sacramento Kings before the draft. He’s already worked out with the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics. He has received ample interest from a number of NBA teams this summer.

He is projected to be either a second-round pick or go undrafted in this year’s draft. Charlotte currently holds the 55th overall pick at the tail end of the second-round. The most likely scenario for Dakota is that he will be picked up by a team for summer league and have a chance to make a training camp roster.

More from Swarm and Sting

During his Senior year at Purdue, Mathias averaged 12.0 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 steals. He also managed to shoot 47.2% from the field, 46.6% from deep and 82.5% from the free throw line. Dakota put up career-highs across the board in his final college campaign.

He was fourth on the Boilermakers in scoring, third in rebounds, first in assists, first in steals and second in three’s made. The 22-year old was one of the top three-point shooters in the entire Big Ten Conference as he ranked third in three’s and first in three-point percentage. He was also seventh in the Big Ten in assists, ninth in steals, fifth in true shooting percentage and fourth in offensive rating.

At 6’4 and 200 pounds, he has the ability to play both point guard and shooting guard. He is a skilled shooter who can also be a playmaker when handling the ball. Although he doesn’t have elite athleticism, he more than makes up for it with his outside shooting.

Mathias was a bit overlooked as he played alongside Carsen Edwards, Isaac Haas and Vincent Edwards.

I think that Dakota Mathias would be a good addition to the Charlotte Hornets’ summer league squad. That would also allow them to get a better look at his game and skill set.
