Charlotte Hornets rumor: Kemba Walker “could be in play” for the Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers seem to be targeting the Charlotte Hornets’ all-star point guard once again as trade talks heat up.
According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, “league sources suggested Charlotte’s Kemba Walker could be in play for the Cavs.” Charlotte HornetsThe Cavaliers are reportedly targeting an established veteran such as Kawhi Leonard and the ‘ point guard. They’ve already inquired about Leonard and were linked to Kemba at the trade deadline this past season.
It looks like the Cavs are looking to land a star player in hopes of persuading LeBron James to re-sign or to rebuild around if he does decide to leave in free agency. LeBron isn’t expected to make a decision regarding his future until free agency begins this offseason.
Prior to the trade deadline in 2017-18, Woj reported that Cleveland “checked in” with Charlotte about the availability of Walker and also that the two sides “definitely talked” about a potential trade. Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer also reported that “NBA executives expect Kemba’s name to be floating around the rumor mill again this summer.”

A trade between the Hornets and Cavs before or on draft night would most likely include Cleveland’s first-round pick (from Brooklyn) which is the 8th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Charlotte holds the No. 11 pick. A deal could involve a pick-swap or the Cavaliers sending their selection for Kemba and the Hornets holding onto their current first-round pick as well.
It’s worth noting that because of the league’s rules, Cleveland must make their pick in the 2018 NBA Draft but can trade it once the selection is made.
Walker is in the final year of his contract and is due for a massive payday once he reaches a new deal. The Cavs’ will surely be taking that into consideration as it lessens Kemba’s trade value.
Although, the 28-year old has been an all-star in each of the past two seasons and is in the prime of his career. He is also the Hornets’ all-time leading scorer.

It seems to be a very fluid situation and nothing is yet concrete between the two sides. It will be interesting to see if a deal is reached by or on June 21st. Kemba Walker is likely the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ backup option if they don’t land Kawhi Leonard.
