Charlotte Hornets sign J.P. Macura to two-way contract
It looks like the Charlotte Hornets have found Marcus Paige’s replacement as they signed J.P Macura to a two-way deal.
According to Jonathan Givony of ESPN, the Charlotte Hornets have signed J.P Macura to a two-way contract. The former Xavier guard went undrafted during the 2018 NBA Draft this year. Givony added that J.P. is a “tough, high IQ shot maker with a ton of game.”
It’s worth noting that Charlotte did host Macura for a pre-draft workout. Although he went undrafted, the 23-year old did workout for a number of teams including the Boston Celtics, the Detroit Pistons, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Phoenix Suns, the Sacramento Kings and the San Santonio Spurs prior to the draft.
J.P. will be taking the place of Marcus Paige as the Hornets’ second player on a two-way deal. Big man Mangok Mathiang is the other two-way player. Paige’s contract expired after the end of the 2017-18 season and was not renewed.

Macura averaged 12.9 points per game, 4.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals during his Senior campaign with the Musketeers. He also shot 47.9% fro the field, 37.7% from deep and 82.1% from the free throw line in 34 total games. J.P.’s did put up a career-high 14.4 PPG during his Junior year. He was named to an NCAA Tournament All-Region team in 2017.
The Lakeville, Minnesota native led Xavier in steals while ranking second on the team in scoring, second in assists, third in three’s made and tied for third in rebounds.
Although he is a bit of a streaky shooter at times, Macura can score in a variety of ways and has the shooting ability to stretch the floor. At 6’5, he has good size for a shooting guard at the next level.
Two-way players can spend a maximum of 45 days with their parent club and will spend most of the season in the G-League. For Macura, he will be an important player and play a vital role for the Greensboro Swarm next season and could make an impact with Charlotte if called up.

It will be interesting to see how the Charlotte Hornets will use J.P. during the 2018-19 season. Marcus Paige only saw limited playing time with the parent team but was a staple in the Swarm’s starting lineup. Other teams got more success out of their two-way players and some even earned a roster spot on their NBA team. We’ll see how Macura will perform during his first year with the Queen City team.
