Charlotte Hornets: James Demery invited to mini-camp
The Charlotte Hornets continue to pick up players for the summer league team with James Demery being the most recent.
James Demery appears to be the latest addition to the Charlotte Hornets‘ summer league mini-camp. The former Saint Joseph’s forward tweeted: “Invited to Charlotte Hornets mini camp…#BuzzCity.” He’s looking to earn an NBA roster spot after going undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft.
Demery only worked out for one team prior to the 2018 Draft. The Hornets hosted him on two separate occasions for a pre-draft workout. He was a part of their second group which featured Mikal Bridges, Theo Pinson and Angel Delgado among others. Charlotte also brought James in for their 10th pre-draft workout which was alongside Jerome Robinson and Wenyen Gabriel.
During his senior year with the Hawks, Demery averaged 16.9 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.1 assists while shooting 47.7% from the field, 27.8% from deep and 63.8% from the free throw line. He made 30 appearances (25 starts) this past campaign for St. Joseph’s.

The 23-year old was second on the Hawks in scoring, second in rebounds and second in steals. He also ranked 10th in the Atlantic 10 Conference in points per game, sixth in field goals made, fifth in two-point field goals made and seventh in total free throw attempts.
At 6’6 and 186 pounds, he has good length for the next level but will likely need to add some weight/muscle in order to defend bigger small forwards in the NBA. The Williamston, North Carolina native will most likely be a shooting guard at the next level which should help but he will definitely need to improve on his outside shooting going forward.

Other undrafted rookies already added to Charlotte’s summer league roster include Gabe DeVoe, B.J. Johnson and Chris Cokley. Willy Hernangomez, Malik Monk, Dwayne Bacon, Miles Bridges and Devonte Graham will also join them in Las Vegas.

It will be interesting to see if James can make an immediate impact with the Hornets’ summer league team. Charlotte clearly has interest in Demery after bringing him in for two pre-draft workouts. He could be a candidate to make their training camp roster or to sign as a G-League player for the Greensboro Swarm.
