Shannon Scott was a once promising talent coming out of high school and now he can prove himself with the Charlotte Hornets in summer league.
The Charlotte Hornets‘ 2018 summer league team is headlined by a number of big names like Malik Monk, Dwayne Bacon, Miles Bridges, and Willy Hernangomez but one player that has gone overlooked is Shannon Scott. Although he’s unlikely to be a star for them in Las Vegas, he could be an unlikely candidate to make some noise this year.
Scott currently plays overseas in Venezuela but just a few years ago, he was one of the top prospects coming out of high school. Shannon was named Mr. Georgia Basketball in 2011 and was a McDonald’s All-American. His college career at Ohio State was a bit underwhelming but he still managed to make two Big Ten All-Defensive Teams and was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten player during his Senior campaign.
Since going undrafted in 2015, Scott has played with the Raptors 905 (NBA G-League), Doxa Lefkadas in Greece, the Long Island Nets (NBA G-League), and Panteras de Miranda. He’s never quite realized his potential but that could change now that he’s with Charlotte. The Hornets new system under head coach James Borrego could be the perfect fit for Shannon.

In seven games with Panteras de Miranda in Venezuela, the 25-year old averaged 8.4 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 44.2% from the field, 42.9% from three and 85.7% from the free throw line. Although he doesn’t have exceptional size at 6’1, Scott is a proven individual perimeter defender as he led the Greek League in steals during 2017.
His NBA experience includes playing with the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns in past summer leagues and signing with and appearing in two preseason games for the Toronto Raptors before being waived in 2015.
Playing time for Scott may be limited this summer as he will be playing behind Devonte’ Graham. His role is unclear but either Shannon or Gabe DeVoe will most likely be used as the primary backup point guard.
With the focus being on the younger roster players for Charlotte, Scott is being overlooked but that could be the perfect situation as he could burst onto the scene with a couple of positive performances.
If nothing else, Shannon can be a bit of a veteran presence for a very young Hornets’ summer league team as he is the second-oldest player on the roster.
As for how he fits with Charlotte past the Summer League, the Hornets are still looking for point guard depth but he could also be an option for the Greensboro Swarm in the G-League who have a hole at point guard after the team did not re-sign Marcus Paige. The journeyman has already shown that he can play well in the G-League.

Shannon Scott is obviously a long shot to make the Charlotte Hornets’ training camp roster and an even longer shot to make their regular season roster but he is an interesting name to watch for this summer. Given his past accomplishments and hype/potential surrounding him when he was a teenager, maybe he can recapture a glimpse of what made him such a highly-touted prospect.
