2017: Picked Malik Monk at #11

Monk is a rare draft pick that fans appreciated. He was a projected top 10 pick but then fell to Charlotte at 11. He won SEC Freshman of the Year in 2017 and was arguably the best shooter in the draft. He did extremely well at the beginning of the season but then lost Playing Time when Nic Batum came back from his injury. In my opinion, Monk should have had more minutes to help him develop.

I mean, how can a rookie get better without some experience? Donovan Mitchell was selected two spots after with the 13th pick. Mitchell was the best rookie in the class, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that he was a better pick. Monk will develop more and get better each season. Donovan Mitchell was in a role where he would immediately start and have an impact to the Utah Jazz.

If Monk and Mitchell were to switch places, then I think Monk would have been in the Rookie of the Year conversation and Mitchell may have struggled with Playing Time as well. Charlotte then had the 41st overall pick and selected Dwayne Bacon from Florida State.

It is also surprising that Bacon fell this far in the second round. He started at the beginning of the year when Batum was out. When Batum came back, his Playing Time decreased just like Monk’s time decreased. These two will most likely play key roles for the Hornets in the future.
