Former Charlotte Hornets’ backup point guard Julyan Stone appears to be heading back overseas to his old club in Italy.

According to Sportando.basketball, Julyan Stone has signed back with Reyer Venezia. The guard spent the 2017-18 season in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. He will now head back to the Italian club for the third time in his career.

Stone first joined Reyer Venezia in 2014 where he played for one season. Julyan then played in Turkey and the NBA G-League before re-signing with them in 2017. After Reyer Venezia released him from his contract, Charlotte signed the 29-year old to a two-year deal in order to bring him stateside where he could be closer to ailing father.

Stone provided depth to the Hornets as the third-string point guard behind Kemba Walker and Michael Carter-Williams. In limited playing time ( 7.6 minutes per game), Julyan put up 0.8 points per game, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. He appeared in a total of 23 games for Charlotte.

More from Swarm and Sting

Because he was only being used sparingly, Charlotte decided to assign Stone to their G-League team. He played in five games with the Greensboro Swarm where he impressed by averaging 7.0 points per game, 7.2 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.6 steals.

Julyan just never seemed to find his rhythm during his lone season with the Hornets.

It was clear that Stone wasn’t in Charlotte’s plans going forward when they traded him to the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team trade involving the Orlando Magic. With the second year of his contract not being guaranteed, the Bulls were able to waive Julyan. Being a free agent, he decided to head back overseas.

Julyan has had past success overseas particularly with Reyer Venezia. He played an important role with the 2017 team that won the Serie A Championship. Stone will now look to recreate that success in Italy as he continues his playing career.

Next: Who is the Hornets second-best player?

After completing his third stint in the NBA, Julyan’s time with the Charlotte Hornets may be his last in the league. Although he didn’t have a memorable season with the Queen City team, Stone did play within his role and most importantly, got to be close to his father. Hopefully, he will have more success with Reyer Venezia.
