Dwight Howard

Going for one last home run, Rich Cho traded for Dwight Howard during the 2017 NBA Draft. The move was met with enthusiasm from a good majority of the Buzz City faithful and looked like the Hornets were going to turn the corner with some much-needed rim protection.

Unfortunately, D12 wasn’t exactly what the Hornets were looking for in terms of strengthening the team defense. Sure he posted the big stats and was another big name for the team, but he did more to hurt the team than he did help it, in my opinion. It was more than just the on-court product, as we learned after Howard left the team.

That said, acquiring Dwight might not have changed much for the Hornets. The Hornets had Miles Plumlee‘s disastrous contract on the book and dealing it for Dwight was a smart move. The experiment didn’t work out and that’s going to be the case sometimes.

Some of these moves didn’t work out or might have been questionable for the team in the long-run. However, the front office shouldn’t stop looking to make a splash just because of a poor recent history with players like Dwight and Lance. Further, this same mindset shouldn’t be used when discussing Hornets draft picks; just because the past had some hardships, doesn’t mean the future isn’t filled with greatness.
