Charlotte Hornets: 5 potential two-way player to sign
3. Joe Chealey
Chealey has already made a name for himself within the Hornets’ organization. He was a late addition to their Las Vegas Summer League squad but impressed a number of key figures including general manager Mitch Kupchak who praised him during a broadcast. The 6’3 guard put up 6.3 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in four outings with Charlotte in Vegas.
Joe was undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft out of the College of Charleston. He played four years at the school where he averaged 18 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 3.6 APG during his Senior Season. He was one of the Cougars best players and appeared in 34 games (34 starts) for the team where he shot 39.3% from the field, 34.8% from three, and 85.8% from the charity stripe.
After losing Marcus Paige, Charlotte and Greensboro could use a point guard to replace his production and roster spot. J.P. Macura is a forward and adding point guard depth may be a priority for the team. If that’s the case, then Chealey seems like the sure-fire option.
He’s already a bit familiar with the system and worked with a few of the Hornets’ coaches. Mitch Kupchak already likes his game so Joe would be the easy choice here. The only question is if Charlotte wants a big man to replace Mangok Mathiang instead of a guard or forward.
