The Charlotte Hornets will hold their second pre-draft workout today, with the likes of Markis McDuffie, Kerwin Roach and others in attendance.

With the Charlotte Hornets watching the NBA Playoffs from home and the 2019 NBA Draft just over one month away, the team is beginning to get the wheels going in preparation for what could be a big draft for Charlotte.

The Hornets are holding their second pre-draft workout today. Donta Hall (Alabama), Nick Perkins (Buffalo), Ahmed Hill (Georgia Tech), Kenny Williams (North Carolina), Kerwin Roach (Texas) and Markis McDuffie (Wichita State) will look to make an impression on the team.

Obviously, this isn’t the most groundbreaking draft workout. However, these players could all be second round or potential undrafted options for the Hornets. Scouting an entire draft class, not just the top of the field, is always important.

The Hornets own two second round picks in this years draft, and will also have their two-way contract openings for the 2019-20 season. Perhaps some of these players could be candidates for a second round pick/two-way contract.

Charlotte’s first pre-draft workout was on May 1st. They brought in projected draft picks Nicolas Claxton and Chris Clemons. The Hornets are off to a strong start in the pre-draft process by getting numerous players in early on.

Of the six players working out for the Hornets today, I would say McDuffie has the best chance of getting drafted and making it into the league. He has great size at 6’8″ and has shooting potential from the perimeter.

Roach is another intriguing prospect that I could see make the NBA. He’s going to have to learn to play more point guard at the next level, but his extreme athleticism will get him looks from teams around the league.

During the 2018-19 season, Roach averaged 14.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists as a senior at Texas. It was probably the best season of his four-year college career.

Getting back to McDuffie, wing players are so valuable in today’s NBA, so if he can become a more consistent shooter, he may have a chance to stick in the NBA. You can never have enough shooters in this league.

McDuffie, who is a four-year college player, like Roach, averaged 18.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in his senior season. He shot just 34 percent from the three-point line, but showed during his career that he is a capable shooter.

Let’s not just give McDuffie and Roach all of the love, though. This workout in Charlotte will be a good opportunity for Hall, Perkins, Hill and Williams. Hopefully they can impress and gain some momentum prior to the draft.

The Charlotte Hornets are coming off a strong draft in 2018, so one can hope that they repeat that success in 2019 and leave draft day grinning from ear to ear. Be on the look out for more draft workouts as we creep up on June 20th.
