Charlotte Hornets Round-Table: 7 questions regarding Kemba Walker’s free agency
By De White
The Hornets have never had a lifer, should Kemba be the first?
Zachary: If he wants to re-sign in Charlotte, then Kemba Walker should absolutely be the Hornets first lifer. I think it’s pretty clear that he’s earned the right to be called the best player in franchise history, and with the rate he is going, he’ll be a Hornets legend that will be tough for others to catch in the future. He’s one of the best point guards in the league, and one of the more loyal players in the NBA, and if he stays in Charlotte for the rest of the career, it will show that he is truly something special.
Caleb: There’s no better player than Kemba to be the first “lifer” of the franchise. Arguably, the best player to put on a Charlotte uniform, Kemba has become the face of the franchise. A born leader at the point guard position, it is safe to say this is his team and it should be his team all of his career. If Charlotte has any chance of competing or attracting a second All-Star, they HAVE to have Kemba leading the charge.
Elijah: I, along with a lot of people, would really like to see that happen. At the very least, if they can’t re-sign him, they should retire his jersey. If any Hornet great deserves it, it’s Kemba. Mitch Kupchak certainly has some work to do in order to make that happen, that’s for sure. Here’s hoping he can get it done.
Filippo: Yes he should, he has all the characteristic to be a lifer. Passionate, loves the city, plays hard. In the last year, he also showed that he cares about the franchise in general, being a guide and an example for the rookies is part of that. He wants the best for the Hornets, that’s why we should hope to have him for his whole career.
Vincent: Walker has stated that he wants to be one of those players who stays with one team, but the Hornets have to their part and get him some help. Walker is the best player in Charlotte Hornets’ history, and people should want him to stay in Charlotte. He has so many of the team’s records now, that it only fits the bill to let him be in Charlotte for the rest of his career.
De: Realistically, I believe Larry Johnson could’ve been the first if his back and knees didn’t start failing him, or maybe Gerald Henderson. Even if he was undervalued a bit. I really wanted to say Gerald Wallace, but he was in Sacramento first and was allowed to leave after six great years. Both of these players could’ve been legitimate lifers. But Kemba really has a chance and should definitely be the first.
