Charlotte Hornets: 4 reasons why PJ Washington was a good pick
No. 4 – He has shown signs of rapid improvement
As many already know, PJ Washington originally tested the NBA Draft process last year. However, after learning that he was not likely to be picked in the first round, Washington returned to Kentucky for his sophomore season and vowed to become a better player.
That’s the thing — he wants to get better. Washington went from averaging 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds as a freshman to averaging 15.2 points and 7.5 as a sophomore. He came back to school more mature and ready to prove/cement himself as a first round talent.
Not only did Washington cement himself as a first round pick, but he cemented himself as a lottery talent in a very deep draft class. He looked like a completely different played in his second year of college, and NBA teams loved to see that development from him.
Since he was in high school, Washington had always been a good rebounder, passer and ball handler. During his time in college, Washington made some big improvements on the defensive end of the floor, as well as his perimeter shooting.
The shooting and defensive abilities are two crucial aspects of the NBA game. He still has some work to do, like all prospects, but his improvement in those two areas have been really promising. He shot 42 percent from the three-point line this past season, sinking 33 three’s.
Washington is still young and has a lot more growth ahead of him. The fact that he has already shown the desire and commitment to put in the work says a lot. I think the organization and the fan base are going to love his work ethic.
