Charlotte Hornets: Predicting each players stats for the 2019-20 season
Malik Monk
One of the more talked about events of the Charlotte Hornets off-season has been Malik Monk‘s decision to pass on Summer League. Monk hasn’t proven a whole lot during his short career thus far, so fans wanted to see the improvements he made this summer before going into an important season for him. We’ll have to wait until preseason to get a look at the man who was chosen over Donovan Mitchell in 2017.
Going into that 2017 NBA Draft, I loved Monk’s game, and I still do. I believe he still has major upside and this season could be a true breakout year from him. However, I can understand fans frustrations with him for not participating in Summer League.
Playing in Las Vegas was a real opportunity for him to show that he belongs and show some that have given up on him that he still has potential. Nobody will hold that against him moving forward, but he really needs to have a big third year.
He’ll be fighting for a starting spot during training camp, and he may have a legit chance to open the season as the starting shooting guard. If he comes off the bench, he’ll likely be used in a Sixth Man role and also be used as the primary option off the bench.
Monk has struggled with his decision making and defense during his first two NBA seasons, so hopefully he shows some improvement in that area. He, like Hernangomez, has gotten a lot stronger this summer, so that will be key for him when attacking the basket and drawing fouls.
Malik Monk has a chance to shine this season. We’ll see how it goes, but he should be able to easily have the best season of his career.
